Summary
You Are Prompted For A Password When Accessing A Windows XP System From A Windows98 System Via A LAN.
Symptom
When you attempt to access a WindowsXP system using a Windows98 system via a network, you are prompted for a password.
At no point has a password been set up for network access.
Cause
If the Network Setup Wizard has not yet been run, this behavior will occur.
Resolution
The Network Setup Wizard has to be run before the WindowsXP system will be accessible on the network.
Right-click the folder you wish to share and select
Sharing and Security
from the popup menu.
You will see that the
Share This Folder
is unavailable.
Click the
Network Setup Wizard
Hyperlink and complete the wizard.
Now you will be able to share the selected folder.
Once sharing is enabled, you will no longer be prompted for a password when attempting to access the system over the network.
