Summary

Some 16-Bit programs such as Edit.com and Debug.exe do not update the screen in a timely fashion on computers with a clock speed over 2.0 GHz.

Symptom

Some 16-Bit programs such as Edit.com and Debug.exe do not update the screen in a timely fashion on computers with a clock speed over 2.0 GHz. If you move the mouse pointer over the window, you see an update occur. This pertains to Windows XP, 2000, and NT. This problem has the potential to affect all older 16-Bit programs, not just those written by Microsoft.



Cause

The timer interval is calculated in a way that wraps for fast processors.

Resolution

Windows NT:
A supported fix is available from Microsoft. It is not available for download, Microsoft Technical Support must be contacted to obtain the patch. There should be no cost for the support call.

Windows 2000:
Microsoft recommends waiting for the next service pack for the resolution of this problem. If an immediate solution is required, Microsoft Technical Support must be contacted to obtain the patch. There should be no cost for the support call.

Windows XP:
Microsoft recommends waiting for the next service pack for the resolution of this problem. If an immediate solution is required, Microsoft Technical Support must be contacted to obtain the patch. There should be no cost for the support call.
